From its modest beginnings in 1994 comprising joint ventures in Guangdong province serving less than 5,000 customers, Hong Kong and China Gas has subsequently experienced rapid growth in its gas businesses on the Mainland. In 2007, Hong Kong and China Gas acquired Panva Gas Holdings Limited, a Hong Kong listed company, becoming its main shareholder. The acquired company subsequently changed its name to Towngas China Company Limited (Towngas China) with a business focus on piped city-gas projects.
Towngas China has established a leading reputation as a quality supplier of gas in mainland China. Representative of its significant investment in the country's gas industry, Towngas China today serves 6 million customers having founded some 63 piped city-gas projects in eleven provinces and one municipality – Anhui, Guangdong, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Shandong, Jilin, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Jiangxi and Chongqing city.
